Ready or Not
I thought six months of a woman patiently and decisively outclassing a man would add up to something. I thought the sheer red-faced embodiment of gaslighting and domestic violence that was Trump’s entire campaign would cause less committed voters to turn on him, not his victims. I thought the killing of Jo Cox would make Leave voters stand back and look at what they were a part of. I thought France and America, stained as those two nations are by their ongoing colonization and subjugation of nonwhite peoples, had reflexes against authoritarianism that would prove more durable.
I was that stupid.
The global white nationalist backlash is a loose coalition of hate groups that hasn’t even fully voiced its agenda yet. It’s in the bumbling-around phase, and it’s winning anyway.
The world has less meaning to me today than it did yesterday.
